Why Arts in
Early and Elementary Education

cloudbg2
P2L is a Play-Based Performing Arts Academy. The school was founded on the belief that the arts can provide a platform for acquiring and absorbing knowledge that is more accessible to pre-school age children than a purely academic approach, without precluding the inclusion of basic academics in the learning process. The P2L Philosophy infuses each learning environment with elemental art. Art-based learning contributes to a deeper interest in academic content, enhanced comprehension, and improved absorption of the content being taught in the learning environment. As the students move through the program daily, they will experience core art classes, such as, Art and Mindfulness, Music, Theater and Dance Movement. When in core academic classes, the play-based performing arts focus encourages students to be creative when learning foundational academic content. Students will be learning in environments set up to stimulate creative thinking and cognitive problem-solving. In addition, learning through the arts encourages and reinforces the following skills

Communication

and Self Control

Arts are a powerful way to ensure communication becomes a skill our students master and are confident using throughout their school experience. Students are encouraged to effectively describe their emotions in the classroom environment and explore coping skills through communication which encourages students to learn how to control and/or regulate the emotions they are feeling throughout their school experience.

The students at P2L are welcomed in a class-appropriate manner to discuss, inquire, and share thoughts and ideas in the learning environment. The coaches at P2L are there to guide the students through age-appropriate conversations about the content being delivered. They provide a space for students to feel comfortable giving feedback as it pertains to learning and exploring new information.

Learning through the arts develops stronger language skills, including strengthened vocabularies. Through talking about their classes and how each student is impacted by the various art-based activities, group communication and exploration is a vital part of our program for improving communication skills in our students.

Creativity

and Imagination

Students are encouraged to approach learning and activities through different perspectives while being confident in taking risks encouraged by creative thinking and processing. When students are given the ability to use and strengthen their imaginations, they become far stronger critical thinkers. The P2L philosophy promotes creativity in every facet of our daily program and celebrates the students’ efforts in expressing themselves through the arts.

Originality is a huge part of the P2L philosophy. We encourage our students to be their own authentic self in their learning environments which promotes a variety of ideas and thoughts in project and play-based learning. We encourage our students to look at mistakes made in the learning environment and how, through investigating the mistake, it may lead to the overall answer to the question or lesson. We encourage our students to focus less on what social group they may fall into due to academic, social, or athletic traits and instead, explore the myriad of talents and gifts they have within themselves.
