Providing a solid foundation of phonetic awareness (aural and oral) is vital for our Players to become strong readers, with robust reading comprehension skills, and proficient communicators, in both written and spoken formats, throughout their lives. Equally important is ensuring that common words and grammar are recognizable and constitute the focus of what we deliver to our Players in this learning environment.

The P2L Language component utilizes creative activities in the various learning environments in the school to introduce and reinforce the foundational basics of early and elementary education. This super interactive and expressive program allows our Players the opportunity to express and communicate, while exploring how letters, sounds, and words work together, to solidify abilities they will use over the course of a lifetime.

DRIVES THE P2L CURRICULUM

Early Childhood is a time for exploration and discovery, and to experience one’s self with others. For many preschool-aged children, it is their first expanded-group social and learning setting, and the first time they have the ability, and need, to make choices. It can be a daunting task for grown-ups. For our 21st – century children, born into a world that is all about choice, capitalizing on the opportunity to make GOOD CHOICES can be a real challenge.

Starting with the idea that we all have “signature strengths”, the P2L Character Power ® program gives concrete expression to these virtues which run through our entire curriculum. In this way, P2L Character Power ® seeks to instill the ability to recognize and foster GOOD CHOICES, utilizing the signature character strength of a given child, both as an individual and as a member of the student body.

A paradigm shift

Since before the 17th century, there has been constant research, backed by numerous studies, on the science of kinesthetic and play-based learning. The conclusion – this approach leads to positive outcomes for students.

John Locke (1632- 1704), among numerous insights, penned the apt term “blank slate”. Locke postulated that this “tabula rasa” is how children greet the world. The surrounding environment as they mature, including the conditions under which they are taught and learn, fills out their metaphorical “slate”.

My complicated, and occasionally tortured, journey through education filling the “slate”, led me to seek something different, to create an institution for change that fills a physical and metaphorical “slate” for learning – a slate that is colorful, abstract, and playful.

Historically, education often consisted primarily of students sitting for hours a day, absorbing downloaded information that, it was believed, they would need to successfully become citizens of our communities. This system served its purpose. It worked, and has allowed our country and much of the world to advance, to develop into what it has become today.

Today we challenge old methodologies, identify new and effective pedagogy, and critique the once-accepted “one way” of learning. The decision to explore the variety of learning environments in your community is a wise one.

We now invite you to explore a shift from the traditional education to a new paradigm of educational mastery and social/emotional wellness through PLAY.
